It can be crushing to find out the acne is not just for teenagers. You may not have had acne as a teenager and now, here it is. What is with that?!?
Adult acne can be caused by hormones. Many women find themselves have acne during certain parts of their menstrual cycle. With perimenopausal estrogen changes, women can find themselves with acne. Women with PCOS often suffer from acne, due to an increase in androgenic hormones.
Stress can cause acne. When you are stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol triggers the oil producing glands in your skin to produce more oil. The combination of oil, normal dead cells in your skin and bacteria that normally live on your skin combine to cause acne. As an adult, you have more dead skin cells hanging out because your skin turn over time gets slower making you more susceptible to acne.
Stress eating can also cause acne if you are increasing fried food, sugary foods or chocolate.
You may be on medications that increase skin oil production. Primary culprits in this department are steroids such as a Medrol dose pack for an allergic reaction, progesterone for excessive periods, some anticonvulsants and Lithium. Tricks to reduce acne
Wash your face at least twice a day. Consult with our aesthetician for the best products for your face.
Wash your hair regularly. This prevents oil from building up on your scalp and getting onto your forehead.

Good foods to prevent acne
Fruits, salads and leafy greens
Foods rich in Vitamin A such as broccoli carrots, cantelope, , mangoes, salmon, sweet potatoes squash and spinach. (Do not take a Vitamin A supplement if you are planning to get pregnant, pregnant or not preventing pregnancy.)
Foods rich in Vitamin C such as lemons, limes and oranges.
Foods rich in Zinc: seafood, nuts, dried fruit and eggs.
Foods which aggravate acne
Fried foods – French fries, fried chicken, fried anything
Lactose triggers acne in some people. Lactose is found in milk, cheese, ice cream, butter to name the most common.
High Glycemic Foods – White bread (bagels, baguettes, croissants, Kaiser rolls, roti and chapatti to name a few) white rice, white spaghetti, potatoes, anything with high fructose corn syrup
